Family Law Question: Is it true that I can lose half of everything I own in a divorce?

If a couple enters a marriage without a pre-marital property settlement agreement, generally, all assets and liabilities obtained during the marriage belong to the couple equally. Exceptions include non-interspousal gifts, inheritances, and other acquisitions identified in the law. Assets and liabilities obtained by someone prior to a marriage generally remain non-marital, and assets and income derived from non-marital assets and income do not become marital property.
